Struggle against Life
Sumitra, who is deaf and dumb, belonged to a poor family of 7 members. Her father died after a few years of her birth in an accident of earthquake and her mother worked as a maid to satisfy the needs of family.
Sumitra was recognised as some unusual being by her family when she was two and half years old. As her family believed in blind faiths and superstitions, her father believed that if she doesn’t get normal within 6 years than they would organise a poojan for her which would make things alright. However the circumstances didn’t change after the poojan and so her family decided to consult a doctor. The doctor told that Sumitra is deaf and dumb and will remain so till the entire span of her life. The family though initially disappointed finally accepted her as deaf and dumb daughter.
They admitted her to various deaf and dumb schools; a few even rejected considering her age more than required for admission. She was admitted to Jetpur’s deaf and dumb school and was kept there for three years. However then they transferred her to Amreli’s Deaf and dumb school.
Within two years her family noticed great changes in her. The school had introduced the hearing aid machinesbut the cost of the machine was too high for Sumitra’s family to pay; so the institute took into consideration their financial position and arranged for the rest of money.
After this, her mother finally after two years was able to hear the word ‘Mummy’from Sumitra’s mouth. Apart from this improvement, she has developed many skills like Rangoli, Mehendi, Stitching and Painting. For this incredible change her mother was very grateful to the Amreli Muk-badhir School.
However, her mother due to illness passed away when Sumitra was studying in this institute. During a program organised in this school, a kind hearted lady who was attending the Function, decided to adopt Sumitra and hence now she lives a happy life.
